Covid-19 in China and in the USA

If you have been infected or think you may be infected with COVID-19 (2)_edited.png

The Chinese government is more centralist and the people care more about the interests of the group. Therefore, they made more rigid rules on regulating COVID-related management. When the epidemic came, everyone gave up their self-interest and followed the government's request, quarantined at home, and put on masks properly. The Chinese government also gave quite specific rules and regulations to people:

As mentioned in 《Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases》,

  • Article 7, “any unit of individual on the territory of the People’s Republic of China must respond to inquiries by medical care and health institutions and anti-epidemic agencies on infectious diseases and accept their examinations and investigations for certification as well as their preventive and control measures, and shall have the right to inform the authorities or file charges against any violation of this Law.”

  • Article 25, “in the event of an outbreak or a prevalence of an infectious disease, the local government shall immediately get people organized to control them and cut off the route of transmission; when necessary, it may take the following emergency measures, subject to reporting to and decision by the local government at the next higher level:

  1. restricting or suspending fairs, assemblies, cinema shows, theatrical performances and other types of mass congregation;

  2. suspension of work, business, and school classes;

  3. provisional requisition of houses and means of transport; and

  4. closing public drinking water sources contaminated with the pathogen of infectious diseases.

  • when a local government at or above the county level receives a report from a government at the next lower level proposing the adoption of the above-mentioned emergency measures, it shall make a decision within the prescribed time limit.

  • The termination of emergency measures shall be announced by the authorities that originally made the decision.”

In contrast, the American people are more interested in their own benefits. When the pandemic comes, they are unwilling to give up their normal work and life because of some uncertain illness from the other side of the world. For cultural and historical reasons, Americans do not wear masks when they are not known to do so, either to protect themselves or others. Although the US government did not respond in time after the outbreak, it gradually put forward epidemic prevention requirements to the public. From a series of epidemic prevention suggestions to the later vaccination, the American people believed that it was reasonable and willing to comply with these regulations.

WHO.int provides the following advice to American citizens:

Advice to Keep Yourself and Others Safe: Do it all!

  • Get vaccinated as soon as it’s your turn and follow local guidance on vaccination.

  • Keep physical distance of at least 1 meter from others, even if they don’t appear to be sick. Avoid crowds and close contact.

  • Wear a properly fitted mask when physical distancing is not possible and in poorly ventilated settings.

  • Clean your hands frequently with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of used tissues immediately and clean hands regularly.

  • If you develop symptoms or test positive for COVID-19, self-isolate until you recover.

And some guidelines for people who get sick:

What to do if you feel unwell

  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. Call by telephone first and follow the directions of your local health authority.

  • Know the full range of symptoms of COVID-19. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, tiredness and loss of taste or smell. Less common symptoms include aches and pains, headache, sore throat, red or irritated eyes, diarrhoea,  a skin rash or discolouration of fingers or toes.

  • Stay home and self-isolate for 10 days from symptom onset, plus three days after symptoms cease. Call your health care provider or hotline for advice. Have someone bring you supplies. If you need to leave your house or have someone near you, wear a properly fitted mask to avoid infecting others.

  • Keep up to date on the latest information from trusted sources, such as WHO or your local and national health authorities. Local and national authorities and public health units are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.
